Preliminary assessment
The difference between the almost right word and
the right word is really a large matter - it's the
difference between the lightning bug and the
lightning.
-
Mark Twain.
A preliminary assessment is a great way to get some input on your work before investing in an expensive
edit or a full assessment. It will equip you with guidelines and suggestions, so you can fine-tune your own
writing before taking the next step.

A preliminary assessment provides you with the following:

  • (Fiction) A concise report outlining the strengths and weaknesses of your submission in the areas of
plot, structure, conflict, characters, point of view, writing style, dialogue, setting and overall tone.

  • (Non-fiction) A concise report outlining the strengths and weaknesses of your submission in the
areas of content, organisation, target audience and language.

  • (Fiction and non-fiction) An extensive copyedit on one full page of your manuscript. This will show you
specific techniques for editing, smoothing and tightening your own work.

To submit your work for a preliminary assessment, please send your details via the
Contact page.

I will email you with submission guidelines and specific questions about your work.

The cost of a preliminary assessment is $150.00 based on a synopsis and the first 3000 words of your
work.

Full assessment and structural development

A full manuscript assessment is a more in-depth look at your entire manuscript. This is often a positive next
step once you have applied changes after your preliminary evaluation.

For this you will receive the following.

  • (Fiction) A detailed report outlining the strengths and weaknesses of your manuscript in the areas of
general interest or story concept, plot, structure, conflict, pacing, consistency, characters, point of
view, dialogue, setting, writing style and overall tone.

  • (Non-fiction) A detailed report outlining the strengths and weaknesses of your submission in the
areas of content, organisation, target audience, accessibility, tone and language.

  • (Fiction and non-fiction) An extensive copyedit on two full pages of your manuscript and a list of
specific writing tips. This will show you techniques for editing, smoothing and tightening your own
    work.

  • You will also receive a copy of your manuscript with specific comments and suggestions marked
within your text. These will highlight more specific areas of concern and offer suggestions for
    improvement if needed.

To submit your work for a full assessment, please send your contact details via the
Contact page.

I will email you with submission guidelines and specific questions about your work.
